ELKO, Nev. – Learn about Elko History, meet a mountain man, and learn how to create a Shoshone basket at the California Trail Interpretive Center. The Trail Center is presenting family friendly programs throughout January, free and open to everyone:

  • 2, 2:00 p.m.: Elko History in Pictures
    Elko was officially established the last week of December 1868. In 1869, Elko was well on its way to becoming a railroad, mining and ranching center in northeast Nevada. Join Research Associate Jan Petersen to see rare photos of Elko. Bring your family and friends, swap stories, and learn some new ones.
  • 10, 2:00 p.m.: For the Kids:  Flint, Steel and S’mores
    Join Park Ranger Alex Rose as he demonstrates how to start a fire with flint and steel. The program concludes with s’mores around the campfire.

 

  • 16, 2:00 p.m.: Finding the Leaves of your Family Tree
    Join Research Associate Jan Petersen and she will help you fill out the branches of your family tree. Find your peeps on the internet, and share your family stories.
  • 24, 2:00 p.m.: For the Kids:  Shoshone Basket Making
    Attention all kids:  Learn how to create your own traditional Shoshone basket.  Recommended for children age 10 and up.
  • 30, 2:00 p.m.: Meet a Mountain Man
    Join Trail Center volunteer and living historian Owen Boyack for a mountain man “show and tell.” Boyack will bring with him items he would carry and use during the 1820s as he explored the American West. Program will take place in the South Fork Room.
